摘要:
The learning role of R&D is an important yet less explored channel which facilitates international technology diffusion in terms of importing. We propose that importing stimulates firms’ R&D through knowledge spillover effect that firms make more investment in R&D to assimilate and exploit knowledge from imported goods. Using a unique dataset of Chinese manufacturing firms, we investigate the relationship between import and R&D intensity, by employing a multiple treatment causal study framework in analyzing both the impact of importing intermediate inputs and capital goods on R&D respectively. We find that the entry into the import market enhances firms’ R&D intensity; import entry of capital goods has a larger positive impact on R&D intensity than that of intermediate inputs both in the short and long run. We also find importing from high-income countries induces higher R&D intensity than importing from low-income sources. This study emphasizes the importance of the learning role of R&D regarding international trade, and contributes to the technological change literature, encouraging more targeted trade and innovation policies which guide importers’ R&D activities.
