PARTⅠ Outreach talk

Introduction：

National University of Singapore (NUS) is a research-intensive university with a rising international reputation. Its Department of Information Systems and Analytics is ranked as one of the best research institutions globally in the field of Information Systems and Analytics. It offers a PhD program in Information Systems that covers a broad spectrum of topics such as:

i. Data Science and Business Analytics

ii. Economics of Information Systems

iii. Social Media, Digital Business, and Digital Innovation

iv. Healthcare Informatics

v. Information Systems Design, Development and Implementation

The faculty employs a wide range of research methods ranging from computational methods such as machine learning, data mining, and lexical document analyses to social science methods such as econometrics, (field and lab) experiments, surveys, and qualitative studies. In this talk, I will share with you the living environment in Singapore (the safest place to live in), the PhD program and research environment in NUS and the opportunities and prospects afforded by the program.

Title：Big Data and Econometrics: Is Theory Still Relevant

Abstract：

The landscape in the generation and sourcing of data for research has changed tremendously in recent years. The proliferation of social media applications, Internet of Things (e.g., sensors, wearables), Internet and mobile applications and others have afforded researchers with datasets that are huge in number of observations, as well as varied in terms of attributes such as text, image, audio, video, signals. Concomitantly, researchers have also upped their game in terms of methods by using econometrics, machine learning, and deep learning to analyze the data. Notwithstanding these advancements in methods, I will highlight, in this talk, some of the dangers to academic research by relying solely on these data analytics methods. I will advocate why theory is still central to academic research and suggest some guidelines for incorporating it into the process of research in this era of big data and business analytics.

Short biography：

Hock-Hai Teo is Provost's Chair Professor of Information Systems. He served as the Head of the Department of Information Systems at the School of Computing, National University of Singapore from August 2008 to June 2015 and as Vice-Dean, Corporate Communications from August 2007 to August 2008. His current research interests focus mainly on Health Informatics, open innovation, and IT artifacts that are geared towards improving individual decision-making, health outcomes, and educational outcomes. Dr. Teo has published broadly in journals such as the ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interactions, MIS Quarterly, Journal of Management Information Systems, Information Systems Research, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, and Information and Management and has presented at numerous international conferences, including the International Conference on Information Systems. He is currently serving or has served on the editorial boards of Data Base for Advances in Information Systems, European Journal of Information Systems, International Journal of Electronic Commerce, Information Systems Research, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management and MIS Quarterly. He has won numerous best paper award at conferences and was also the winner of the MIS Quarterly Reviewer of the Year (2004) award.
