Personality provides a lens for understanding human behavior, but the applications of personality theories in OB/HRM research have largely been based on a static and somewhat limited view of personality. In this talk, I will discuss how personality constructs may be reconceptualized to account for the dynamic interaction between the person and the environment. I will report several of our empirical investigations to highlight the possibility of a broadened view of personality. Finally, I will outline a few areas in OB/HRM research where a closer examination of dynamic personality constructs can prove fruitful.
Dr. Jason Huang is an assistant professor in the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations at Michigan State University. He received his PhD in Organizational Psychology from Michigan State University in 2012. Dr. Huang’s research focuses on three themes: (a) personality and adaptability at work; (b) training and transfer; and (c) insufficient effort responding on surveys and tests. Dr. Huang’s research has appeared in top tier journals such as Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Psychological Bulletin, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and Journal of Management. Dr. Huang has been the recipient of the William A. Owens Scholarly Achievement Award by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and Best Paper Award by the Academy of Management. He currently serves on the editorial boards for Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Vocational Behavior, and Journal of Business and Psychology.
